Grandparents and grandchildren share a joyful connection. This day of celebration was established to honor that special bond and love, was designated as National Grandparents Day.  National Grandparents Day is proclaimed a secular holiday that is celebrated in the United States and Canada.

Where did it all begin?

Mrs. Marian Lucille Herndon McQuade, from West Virginia, who lived to be 91-years-old (1917-2008), and was a mother of 15 children.  Mrs. McQuade was the original person who thought up Grandparents Day.

When Marian McQuade was a small child, she visited her grandmothers farm in West Virginia many times, and accompanied her grandmother to see and assist older people in their community.

Grandparents Day is celebrated every year on the first Sunday after Labor Day.  For 2011 it is on September 11, which is also designated as, “Patriots Day.”  In 2010, it was celebrated on September 12th.

The proclamation governs that the first Sunday following Labor Day is designated as National Grandparents Day in America.

Grandparents Day was first proclaimed in West Virginia in 1973. The First National Grandparents Day was celebrated September 9, 1979, on a Sunday.

On the tenth anniversary of Grandparents Day, the U.S. Postal Service issued a fitting commemorative envelope with Marian McQuade’s portrait.

By the twenty-fifth anniversary of Grandparents Day (2003), approximately  three million Grandparents Day greeting cards were sold every year.

As of last year, representing one-third of the total population, there are now more than seventy million grandparents in the U.S. That number grows each year, at a rate of 1.7 million new grandparents added to those numbers every year.

My grandparents were hard working and soft-hearted. I loved them more than I can describe.   My fondest memories in life were the ones when my brother and I spent at their home at the beach in Tillamook and on their 160 acre farm in Patton Valley. I will never forget my grandparent’s house and I know the memories I have of smells, sights and sounds from there are some of the happiest I have, and keep, and share, of childhood.
